8. Alan Contracts Coronovirus COVID-19 at Rosslyn Retirement Residence…and Survived !

In October 2019 after staying at Trillium Hospital for over 6 weeks for observation and stabilization, but without any diagnostic testing performed; the government social workers arranged for Alan to be moved to Hamilton for placement in a long term care nursing home. However, this was completely against the advice of Alan’s Legal and Financial Advisor with Gerry Jutsun, and his Healthcare and Medical Coordinator with Dr. Richard Buchanan.

On Tuesday November 26, 2019 at approximately 10:15 AM, their objection was emphatically made to Alan’s social worker “Tina”, and where Gerry Jutsun exclaimed vocally to her that they were looking at living accommodations in Mississauga, close to their office and where Alan had been living for over a decade.

Instead of considering their concerns and objections, “Tina” and her social worker team made their own decision to move Alan Russell to Rosslyn Retirement Residence, and where Alan was relocated from Trillium Hospital to Rosslyn Retirement Residence on Wednesday, November 27, 2019. The home is a private nursing home owned by the Martino family and which is regulated by the Ontario Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA).

Alan only agreed to move to Rosslyn Retirement Residence, because the social workers at Trillium Hospital had told him that he was occupying valuable bed space and needed to free up a bed, so that other patients could be placed in his bed.

As the caring humanitarian that Alan is, he gracefully agreed to vacate his bed so that other patients would be provided with space, notwithstanding that there was still urgent need for Alan to have medical attention for treating his stroke and diabetes, as well as an affective disorder with depression and suicidal ideation. Nonetheless, Alan willingly consented to travel to Hamilton and be placed in Rosslyn Retirement Residence, which already had a negative perception as a sub-standard nursing home in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The negative reputation of Rosslyn Retirement Residence was soon realized and Alan was very dissatisfied and unhappy with his living accommodations and pleaded with his Legal Advisor Gerry Jutsun, that he wanted to be moved elsewhere to a better quality retirement nursing home.

His complaints included an infestation of mice and lack of general care where he was left in a basement for several days on end, unattended and alone in isolation. He was also routinely rushed to Hamilton General Hospital and checked for additional strokes and cardiac issues, but once again never tested for paralysis and mobility in his legs. A further complication arose at Rosslyn Retirement Residence where he was left unattended for days on end, and developed serious bed sores on his back and major disfigurement and eruptions on his feet.

He would later be taken back to Trillium Hospital to assess if his feet needed to be amputated from lack of blood circulation and possible gangrene, and treatment of serious bed sores on his back.

Coronovirus COVID-19 Comes to Rosslyn Retirement Residence – Alan is Infected!

With the arrival of Coronovirus COVID-19 into Canada, nursing homes were a very susceptible and vulnerable environment and where Premier Doug Ford would eventually call in the Canadian Military to intervene and takeover affected nursing homes. As feared, Rosslyn Retirement Residence was one of many nursing homes that permitted an infestation of COVID-19 and the entire residence was infected with many residents succumbing to the virus. With all residents moved to hospitals, 16 residents who contracted Coronovirus subsequently died and Alan was also infected with the deadly disease!

Once he tested positive in Rosslyn Retirement Residence, he was immediately moved to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton and wherein he tested positive for over a month, but exhibited no symptoms. Alan was terrified and believed he was going to die, but miraculously showed no symptoms and was asymptomatic. After 6 weeks of constantly testing positive for Coronovirus, he was suddenly negative for the virus and was cleared of any infection of COVID-19. With a clear recovery from COVID-19, he was subsequently relocated to another, better quality nursing home in Hamilton.

Alan was Blessed to survive…once again !

Alan is now safely staying at Macassa Lodge nursing home in Hamilton until further notice.
